About

Mr Simon Butler-Manuel is a Consultant Gynaecologist specialising in Gynaecological Surgery for cancer and complex benign disease. He is known as one of the renowned minimal access gynaecological surgeons in the UK and is recognised internationally for his expertise in both gynaecological oncology and minimal access surgery. Mr Butler-Manuel is a pioneer of the adoption of robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery in the UK. He is also an experienced Colposcopist.

Simon obtained his medical degree at St Thomas' Hospital Medical School, University of London in 1988. He later became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England before pursuing his passion for gynaecological surgery and gynaecological oncology.

Mr Butler-Manuel completed a research post between St George's and the Hammersmith Hospitals. His research investigated the pathophysiology of side-effects following radical surgery for cervical cancer and he was awarded a MD for his work. He subsequently completed a Fellowship in Oncology, funded by Macmillan, in Southampton and Portsmouth before he was appointed as a Consultant Gynaecological Oncologist at the Royal Surrey Hospital in Guildford. In this position, Mr Butler-Manuel helped to establish the new Gynaecological Cancer Centre which is now recognised as one of the leading centres for gynaecological cancer care and robotic surgery in the UK.

He also sees private patients at Nuffield Health Guildford Hospital, London Bridge Hospital, New Victoria Hospital and Spire Gatwick Park Hospital.

In addition to his highly recognised clinical work, Mr Butler-Manuel is an acclaimed surgical teacher and trainer and has run a number of laparoscopic & robotic hysterectomy and ovarian cancer surgery courses both in the UK and abroad. He also regularly speaks at professional courses, meetings and conferences in his area of expertise. Mr Butler-Manuel is also a Supervisor on the Gynaecological Oncology Subspecialty Training Programme run by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and is currently College's representative for Oncology.

Explanation

Dr Simon Butler-Manuel was very personable and empathetic towards my condition. He was humble and clear, and ensured I fully understand the scope of my procedure. He made minimal incisions, avoided the need for stitches or staples which was preferred as to avoid scarring, and the next day following my operation he came by to give me a full breakdown of how my procedure went and what I can expect moving forward.
