Mr Tim O'Brien is a Consultant Urological Surgeon specialising in kidney cancer, bladder cancer, and testicular cancer. He receives many referrals from all around the South of England for complex kidney cancer surgery, particularly the excision of large tumours that have entered the inferior vena cava or the heart. He has now conducted more than 200 partial nephrectomies and has taught the techniques across Europe.
Mr O'Brien's skills and achievements have been recognised on a global scale; he has previously attained the British Association of Urological Surgeons' Golden Telescope, the highest accolade that a young consultant urologist in the United Kingdom can achieve. He later led the team that established Guy's Hospital's urology centre, which has changed the way urology patients at Guy's and St Thomas' are treated. In 2012, he also co-developed a multidisciplinary service at Guy's for patients with retroperitoneal fibrosis. Mr O'Brien continues to broaden his already vast clinical expertise through research, board meetings, and time in the clinic.
At Guys' Hospital, he conducts retroperitoneal lymph node dissections for patients with residual testicular cancer following intensive treatment. He and his team have refined the procedure of blue light cystoscopy (photodynamic aided resection) in bladder cancer and have published multiple articles on the technique. This earned them a prestigious prize from the European Association of Urology, and in 2010, Mr O'Brien presented the case to the FDA for the approval of the technique in the US.
In 2011, he was voted Chairman of the British Association of Urological Surgeons' division of oncology, where he leads the efforts to improve urological cancer surgery in the UK.
