DIPLOMA: PERSON-CENTRED COUNSELLING – 2007 - 2010 – Buckinghamshire

EMDR - Level 1 - 2013

EMDR - Level 2 - 2014

University - Buckinghamshire University 2007 - 2010

I started working with Gemma in Autumn 2015 following a bereavement. At that time it felt like every aspect of my life had unravelled. I had worked with other therapists over the years but Gemma was the only one who actually helped me to understand my behaviours and patterns as well as work with my grief. Her unwavering commitment and consistency have allowed me to develop a level of trust in her and in myself that I could never have imagined. Her wisdom and knowledge are far beyond her years. Gemma offers a humorous and fresh approach to therapeutic work and I know my life would hold less hope for the future without her incredible guidance.

I have been continuing to work with Gemma on my recovery from an eating disorder through the many ups and downs that recovery brings. She has been consistently alongside me, encouraging and advising me through the highs and lows. Every time I feel beat and out of strength she helps me to stand again and shows me the answers within myself that enable me to keep progressing. I am consistently encouraged to challenge my eating disorder and supported in doing so with incredible care. With Gemma I can laugh and cry and everything in between whilst feeling completely accepted as i am and never judged. She fights my illness with me, alongside me with strength and passion that encourages and enables change. I have never felt more supported and believed in by a professional which enables me to keep believing in recovery and to keep getting closer to that goal.

Having worked closely with Gemma on a very sensitive and demanding matter, I found her to be pragmatic, robust, determined and above all compassionate. Gemma approached difficult situations with an objective stance, which resulted in her patient having increased trust and faith in her. Gemma made herself available at all times (whenever possible) in ensuring that she was able to offer a complete and full service for the benefit of her patient. Gemma was both reliable and available on short notice to address what were undoubtedly difficult and stressful situations.

Gemma has honestly been a life saver. Having worked with various treatment specialists and seeing different therapists over the years, it's only been since meeting Gemma that I have begun to make significant progress in my recovery journey. I have never had so much support and encouragement from a professional. Gemma is incredibly understanding and intuitive. She is professional but also easy-going, which makes it easier to talk and express thoughts, however silly or crazy they might feel. It feels more like having an extremely knowledgable and helpful friend to talk to than a therapist. But that's not saying she won't challenge you if she believes you're ready! Gemma goes above and beyond and I couldn't be more grateful to have found her. She really is a gem.

I met Gemma Wood, exactly when I needed Gemma Wood. Having just been diagnosed with BPD age 22 - and having been through many a therapist over the course of the previous 5 years; she solely became the person who would finally help me understand why I had been feeling the pain I had been feeling all of my life. She helped me build strategies and techniques in order to improve the quality of my life which was slowly spiralling out of control. We found ways to sort through my trauma. She helped me find control in a strong and logical way, and explained things to me and my family, giving me time to process everything at my own pace. Two words - WOULD RECOMMEND. She saved my sanity, and helped me learn what it feels like to be able to trust another human again, while we still manage to have a professional relationship of which I am eternally grateful for. I am now looking to get a job and insert some structure into my life, as well as to continue working on my desire to be a singer. I don't think I could have found this motivation without her guidance.

I have been working on my recovery from an eating disorder with Gemma since September 2016 having spent the last 12 years in and out of various treatment, always relapsing, never feeling understood, never dealing with the root causes of my illness and never being shown how to shape my future differently. With Gemma though i feel truly cared for, safe to explore recovery and supported to make positive changes. I am treated as an individual and have l finally started to work out the historical factors that contributed to the development of my eating disorder as a way of surviving as well as the issues that have maintained it. I am further into recovery than I have ever been before and more than that I am confident that with my perseverance and Gemma alongside me I can get further still. Gemma is truly unique as a therapist, she genuinely cares, her hard work to help is unmatched in my experience and she has been a true blessing in helping not only me start to get my life back from the illness that has stolen so much from me; but she is also helping give me back to my husband and daughter who have so often lost me to my eating disorder.

I have been working with Gemma for over 18 months. After experiencing many other relationships with professionals in this field, Gemma has been the one person who has seemed to offer me the most care, understanding, and insight into to my Eating Disorder so far. My level of awareness into both my eating disorder behaviours and the possible reasons I found this 'way' in my life to cope (starving my most unbearable feelings and experiences) is now starting to offer me new ways to engage in relationships, rather than escape them. Gemma often helps show me ways to change and I know if I am really in need for her support, she won't leave me to struggle alone between sessions. I can reach out to her, with the knowledge she will get back to me (which is something really unique as I have never felt this held in my attempts to recovery before). I guess the differences that Gemma offers to me, is she forms part of my 'scaffolding' whilst helping enable me to rebuild my own foundations for the future. I know my journey still has a long way to go, but this is the furthest I came come before and trust that with Gemma's help I can continue to move further into recovery.

I've been seeing Gemma for almost a year now, after having gone through several other therapists. I was at a point in my life when I thought my PTSD was untreatable, but after hard work and persistence from both myself and Gemma, my flashbacks have almost completely gone and the terror i was living in has disappeared. The best thing about Gemma, besides her specialism in treating trauma, is that i feel completely safe with her and can trust her 100%. Gemma truly knows what she's doing and knows how to productively engage with with her patients. I couldn't ask for a better therapist.

My son and I have been working with Gemma around 9 months getting help with PTSD, which has driven GAD and obsessive thoughts. The progress has been tremendous, Gemma helped set realistic goals and each one of them has been achieved. When people suffer with anxiety related conditions its part about dealing with historic and current crises and part about building future life skills. Gemma has made a pivotal difference in all of these stages. Her approach is open and flexible and multi disciplined, I can contact her any time and whilst its clear that my son is the patient and therefore the one in control she will always take my input on board and is very responsive and reassuring. Gemma has great technical skill and breadth of disciplines (EMDR, CBT to name a few) and works well with psychiatrists offering valuable insights and coordinated care. Her greatest attribute from my perspective however is her genuine care, I don't know how she maintains the level of real concern and responsiveness day in and day out but she does. In summary we trust Gemma and that is not a word i use lightly in this context as it denotes not only technical excellence, but compassion and consistent responsiveness. We're in the 'build for the future' stage now where lifelong skills will be gained, Gemma's relationship with my son reassures me that he will do this well. I see a long term relationship with Gemma even if it becomes very infrequent, who of us wouldn't benefit from wise and practical counsel through our lives.

Gemma is a genuinely empathetic person who is clearly extremely passionate about her patients. She is also willing to give her objective opinions about life events which I find extremely reassuring. Gemma does everything she can to ensure that she is always available and I have full support at all times.

I started working with Gemma seven months ago at a time in my life when I felt I had exhausted every option. I had tried many different types of therapy with many different people over the years but always seemed to come back to the same place and experience the same frustrations. Gemma's approach is intense in the best possible way! She is fiercely compassionate and committed to her work and her clients/patients (?) but has also helped me develop a different sense of self and challenge many of my behaviour patterns that had become the norm in my life. There is no doubting her experience of life and in her field, which make you feel incredibly safe in what can be a very difficult process. With Gemma I have developed trust and the feeling of being heard and understood that no other therapist has been able to offer me whilst working with trauma in over 20 years. She really is a one off.
