Ms Retha Welding is a physiotherapist based in London. She did neurological rehabilitation initially and then started her own private practice in Bloemfontein, South Africa. After relocating to the UK in 2004, she worked in private practice which involved treatment of muscular and skeletal conditions (musculoskeletal treatments), rehabilitation and ergonomics in gyms, surgeries and the corporate sector. As part of a multidisciplinary team, that includes consultants, surgeons, radiographers and personal trainers, she gained vast experience in pre and post surgery rehabilitation, sports injuries and correction of biomechanics, and went on to develop an interest in analysing walking patterns (gait analysis), working closely with a podiatrist for many years.
Ms Welding sees various patients from runners and tri athletes to professional dancers, performing artists, martial artists and yoga and Pilates teachers, as well as office workers who have spent long hours at their desks. Besides also treating repetitive strain injury (RSI) and postural conditions, she also does onsite ergonomic assessments of work stations.
Clinical Pilates, in addition to gait analysis, is another of her special interests, using Pilates as a tool in diagnoses and treatment, leading clinical Pilates classes in a group set up. As an Integrated System Approach trained physiotherapist, she has a unique skill set that allows solving the cause of dysfunctions and restoring the correct biomechanics in our bodies for optimal function.
In her spare time she is the pitch side and match day physiotherapist for the Army Medical Services Rugby team. With her interests being very much based around beautiful movement, she loves to practice yoga, dancing, rock climbing and adventure sports.
