Professor Basil Sharrack is a Consultant Neurologist and Honorary Professor of Clinical Neurology at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield. He is an expert in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and is the Director of the Sheffield MS Research Clinic. He is the Neuro-inflammation Lead at the National Institute of Health Research, Sheffield Biomedical Research Centre. Professor Sharrack trained at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, University College London and was awarded a PhD from King's College, London
Professor Sharrack's main areas of specialist interest are neuroinflammation and degeneration in relation to MS. He has played a leading role in the design and conduct of MS clinical trials including taking a patient's own healthy haematopoietic stem cells (which become blood cells) and transplanting them back to the patient after high dose chemotherapy. This is called Autologous Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation. He is also interested in cognitive rehabilitation in MS and increased pressure around the brain without a known cause (idiopathic intracranial hypertension).
Hugely experienced and respected in his field, he has authored over 90 peer-reviewed original articles and received over £8 million in grants and income from commercial clinical trials.
