Professor Mathias is a professor of neurovascular medicine in the University of London and has been an honorary consultant physician at St Mary's Hospital since 1982. He was clinical service and research director of two leading NHS and academic departments.

His clinical interests include hypotension, postural tachycardia syndrome, fainting, excessive sweating, and temperature regulation disorders.

He is recognised as a leader in the field of autonomic research and has a strong clinical research background. Professor Mathias has been director of two leading departments in the field of neurology, with both national and international referrals. He directed scientists and clinicians in researching the role of the autonomic nervous system in health and disease and has collaborated with many renowned scientists both in the UK and internationally, from Adelaide, Australia, to Tokyo, Japan.
