I trained at St Thomas' Hospital, London, Moorfields Eye Hospital, London and Eye Care Centre, Vancouver, Canada. My Research (MD) was completed at the Institute of Ophthalmology (London) UK and my Specialist Fellowship at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada.
In recent years I have performed in the order of 500 surgical or laser procedures each year. My small-incision, no-stitch cataract surgery utilises state-of-the-art phakoemulsification technology and is usually performed under topical (local) anaesthetic. Pre-existing refractive errors (long-sightedness, short sightedness and astigmatism) are corrected at the time of cataract surgery and reduce the requirement for glasses following the operation. I offer standard or multi-focal intra-ocular lenses (the latter, which reduce the need for patients to wear both distance and reading glasses following cataract surgery). If required I offer YAG laser capsulotomy procedures for patients that develop post-operative posterior capsule opacification (PCO; the formation of an opaque membrane behind the intraocular lens implant.
The surgical procedures for glaucoma that I offer include trabeculectomy, combined cataract and MIGS surgery (minimally invasive glaucoma surgery - ie stent insertion) or combined cataract and filtration surgery (phako-trabeculectomy), valved drainage tube implantation, bleb revision, selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) and laser iridotomy.
I am married with two children and my hobbies include field hockey, sailing and skiing. I am starting a new hobby as a silversmith.

I qualified as a doctor from St Thomas's Hospital Medical School (London University).

I obtained my MD at Moorfields Eye Hospital and The Institute of Ophthalmology (London University).
I trained as an ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital, St Thomas' Hospital, Greenwich Hospital and the Eye Care Centre & University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada.
I obtained an NHS Consultant post at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital in 1997 where I set up a comprehensive glaucoma service and research at the University of East Anglia (UEA).
During my career, I have been involved with a significant amount of international, national and local eye research, mainly relating to glaucoma, this being basic science research, epidemiology as well as clinical research. I have published approximately 200 peer-reviewed papers (cited 8513 times by 2022) and have h-index and i10-index scores of 46 and 90 respectively (both classed as 'oustanding').
My private practice is all carried out at the Spire Hospital in Norwich and I have worked at the Spire Norwich Hospital since 2000, my practice relating mainly to cataract surgery and glaucoma.
I am passionate about explaning all procedures to patients, I care about successful outcomes and I always try to offer a high quality standard of care. My surgical complications rates are low and well below the national average.
With respect to glaucoma, I offer both a screening and diagnostic service, together with long-term monitoring (follow-up) with state-of-the-art visual field testing (using the Humphrey machine) and optic nerve imaging (Optical Coherence Tomograhic scanning; OCT). Treatment strategies, when required, can be medical, laser-based or surgical.
