Professor Martin Birchall is a Consultant Ear, Nose, and Throat Surgeon and Professor of Laryngology with more than two decades of expertise in treating and managing ENT problems, particularly swallowing, airway, and voice problems. Professor Birchall received his medical degree in 1984 from the University of Cambridge before completing basic and specialist training at University College Hospitals and other prestigious London hospitals. He was appointed consultant and entered the specialised registry in 1996.
Professor Birchall is a world pioneer in otolaryngology, leading a large research team that develops biomedical technologies to help treat and manage airway problems. He also co-led the team that performed the world's first stem cell-based organ transplant in 2008, and he was later part of the team that performed the world's second laryngeal transplant at UC Davis in California.
Professor Birchall specialises in the treatment of vocal cord weakness and has developed methods to restore function to the damaged vocal cords by utilising intact nerves (laryngeal reinnervation). His work is aided by speech therapists to guarantee that his patients achieve a full recovery.

Prof Birchall was outstanding in his approach to understand my issues and what was needed to investigate and what exactly he would do and then to explain details on front of the scans. I could not have asked for a more qualified individual in the context of my problem.

I am delighted to recommend Professor Martin Birchall which is an excellent and highly regarded Ear, Nose & Throat Specialist. I regularly refer patients to Professor Birchall and would have no hesitation in recommending him to family and friends.
Dr. Vinay Sehgal
I am very lucky to have Martin as a senior colleague at UCLH, considering that he is one of the leading academic laryngologists in the world. Most of his practice is naturally tertiary-level, as most of us refer our challenging laryngological cases to him. For sure, Martin is my veritable go-to-guy in this regard, both in the NHS and privately.
