Medical Procedures

Renowned for interventional bronchoscopy and applying it to respiratory medicine, Professor Pallav Shah has pioneered a number of novel procedures for treating lung diseases. For example:

  • bronchial thermoplasty to treat asthma
  • lung volume reduction to treat severe emphysema, using endobronchial valves, umbrella-like devices, coils and stents

He offers new treatments for COPD and chronic bronchitis, to significantly improve associated symptoms such as inflammation and mucus production. Treatments include:

  • vapour therapy
  • targeted nerve ablation
  • RejuvenAir® procedure, which uses liquid nitrogen to freeze the surface cells – the airway epithelium – allowing the epithelium to regenerate.

When it comes to treating lung cancer, Professor Pallav Shah offers a range of procedures including:

  • diathermy (using heat) and cryotherapy (using low temperatures)
  • inserting gold markers to enable treatment with the CyberKnife® – a fully robotic radiation delivery system to treat tumours

Professor Shah has known me for a few years and has given me excellent advice on how to treat my asthma. He is happy to suggest new medication. He advised me to stop working with young children since then my asthma is much better. He is a very caring person. He always greets you with a reassuring smile. One feels that one is in excellent hands.

I have been seeing Professor Shah since 2012 for an illness that took time to diagnose. Once diagnosed Professor Shah ensured I received prompt treatment and regular check-ups to monitor progress with the illness. The illness relapsed after clearing in 2014 or 2015 and he has ensured we have taken a more cautious approach to initially taking me off the medication and on-going monitoring after it cleared again. He has been very patient in explaining reasons for his treatment recommendations and always asked if I required more information.

I was referred to Professor Shah by my GP, Dr Mark Bushnell of the Sloane Street Surgery. Over the summer I experienced difficulty breathing and was very congested (at times a bit alarming). It seemed to get worse in heat and humidity. I had difficult sleeping and coughed up phlegm. At my initial consultation, Professor Shah said 'I can help'-very reassuring. He heard the wheezing and saw the results of the breathing test which showed pretty severe congestion. He immediately prescribed an inhaler, various nasal sprays and a nightly pill. I made an appointment to see him the following week. At this appointment my chest was beginning to clear and I was breathing better but not 100%. I have just returned from my 1 month appointment. My lungs are completely clear and I am moving about normally (up and down stairs, long walks etc). I left with 4 months of prescriptions and will return after 4 months for a check up. Needless to say I can't praise Professor Shah more highly. He is professional, thoughtful and diagnosed my situation perfectly. My quality of life has improved dramatically. One of the best medical practitioners I have ever encountered.

Professor Shah has been treating me for 4 years for Sarcoidosis. From the outset he has always been very informative about my condition. We now have my sarcoidosis under control and even when it was at its worst I always felt reassured after my visits to his clinic. I felt that I was very much in a safe pair of hands. He is a very understanding man and does not simply give a diagnosis and treatment plan - one is very much treated as an individual. A great quality for a medical practitioner. I would thoroughly recommend him.

My personal review of Professor Shah is as follows. He is obviously an imminently qualified man in his field, which he is extremely passionate about. I feel very assured and safe when I have a consultation with him, where he is most diligent in prescribing me the exact medication which he wishes me to take.He is a very kind and caring man, who wants to do the very best he can for his patients. I sincerely hope he will receive the necessary approvals for his COPD Study, if asked and I have the right criteria, I would be more than happy to participate in. I am absolutely sure that I would be in the safest of hands. He is a great credit to the Brompton Hospital.

I don't know where he finds the hours to fit in everything that he does, but he is always there for you personally. He's never distracted by anything else, he explains everything and he is so, so kind. He's at the top of his game because he is brilliant at what he does. He changed my life! Thank you Professor Shah - I can't begin to tell you how grateful I am.
