Professor Peter Garrard directs the dementia research group at St George's, University of London Neuroscience Research Centre (Molecular and Clinical Sciences Research Institute) focused on language change in dementia, computational linguistics, imaging correlates of progressive aphasia and the molecular mechanisms of pathology in frontotemporal dementia. He specialises in neurological disorders, particularly neurodegenerative dementia, cognitive disorders, progressive language disorders, early-onset dementia and frontotemporal dementia.
Professor Garrard graduated from the University of Oxford in 1985, proceeding to earn an MD ChB in 1990 from the University of Bristol and a PhD in 1999 from the University of Cambridge.
He took up a post as a consultant neurologist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in 2001, subsequently moving to a similar post at the Royal Free Hospital from 2005 - 2007. He became a consultant neurologist at Southampton General Hospital in 2007 for three years.
Professor Garrard has also been involved in academic roles, in his capacity as a senior lecturer in clinical neuroscience at University College London from 2001 to 2007, as well as a reader in neurology at the University of Southampton from 2007-2010. Since 2010, he has been a reader and then Professor in neurology at St George's, University of London.
