Dr Tristan Ramcharan is a highly skilled consultant paediatric and sport cardiologist who works in the world-renowned cardiac unit at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. He specialises in treating heart problems in children, from newborns to young adults, and is highly skilled in advanced imaging techniques including trans-thoracic echocardiography, transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE), cardiac CT and cardiac MRI. His practice is centred on a family-centric approach that prioritises understanding the needs of both children and their parents. Dr Ramcharan’s empathetic communication style and clear explanations make him an excellent choice for anyone seeking treatment for their child's heart condition. He is confident in managing a wide range of heart problems in children, including heart murmurs, chest pain, palpitations, fainting and POTS. He has a particular interest in exercise induced symptoms - including chest pain, dizziness, palpitations and fatigue.
As well as paediatrics, Dr Ramcharan is passionate about sport, exercise, and cardiac rehabilitation. He has an MSc in Sport Cardiology, graduating with Distinction from St George's University London in 2022. He can conduct cardiovascular screening to detect potential causes of sudden cardiac death in young athletes and those involved in competitive sports. As a recognised expert in paediatric sport cardiology, he has been appointed to the English Football Association’s sport cardiology expert panel.
During a consultation with Dr Ramcharan, he will undertake a detailed history and cardiovascular examination of your child, including checking their height, weight, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation levels. He may also perform a 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) and an ultrasound (echocardiogram) to assess the rhythm, electrical activity, structure, and function of the heart.
Furthermore, he is an active researcher with several international presentations and publications in peer-reviewed journals, covering both congenital, acquired heart disease and sport cardiology. He was the author of one of the first articles to be published internationally on Multi-system Inflammatory Syndrome in Children Associated with COVID (MIS-C/PIMS-TS).

Dr Ramcharan was very empathetic and made my daughter feel at ease.

We saw Tristan for my son who had acute anxiety from a perceived heart problem. Tristan was friendly and reassuring from the outset and did everything to put my son at ease. My son was given a thorough examination and full explanation on what was found. I was extremely happy with the way Tristan conducted himself and my son left feeling he had answers to all the questions he had. He is now much, much happier.

Tristan has been very thoughtful and considerate with both us as the parents and our son through the consultation process. He has been exceptional at communicating with us throughout and accommodating us with next to no waiting time. He was calm and engaging, putting Freddie at ease in his consultation room before he had started any of his testing/diagnostics and was very comprehensive in his assessment of our son. The report came through promptly and he gave us clarity where other consultants/Doctors hadn’t been able to. We would highly recommend Tristan.

Really kind and caring doctor, spent a lot of time making sure my child was comfortable and interacted on his level. Made the consultation around him and he felt that he was the focus rather than us as parents. He spent the time before the consultation to get in contact and also followed-up after the appointment to ensure we understood everything and to clarify if we had any questions. One of the few paediatric sport cardiologists in the region - we are very lucky he is based here

Fantastic doctor, who put my nervous daughter at ease. He corresponded with me beforehand to discuss a particular issue and gently raised my concerns with her during the appointment. Tristan definitely went above and beyond.

We saw Dr Ramcharan on 2nd April 2024 at Birmingham Childrens Hospital. Before the appointment my son was extremely nervous, anxious and worried of the diagnosis. Dr Ramcharan's calming manner made my son feel at ease. He spoke to him extensively about our holiday, football, school and his experience of working with professional sportsman and women. Both my wife and I thought this really helped my son and made him feel at ease with Dr Ramcharan. This really helped calm the anxiety and nervousness. Both my wife and I felt Dr Ramcharan was extremely knowledgable and showed experience in Paediatric Cardiology. His explanation to us about what we thought my son had was very easy to understand. Thankfully my son was given the all clear much to our relief.
